Heavy equipment filter change intervals: what should set them

Heavy equipment filter change intervals: what should set them

There is no single right number of hours for a filter change. The schedule comes from the machine maker, and it should be adjusted by working conditions and measured condition.

Start from the operator's manual

The maker's maintenance schedule gives an interval for each filter, in service hours. Many manuals also call for an early first change after a new machine is commissioned or an engine or hydraulic system is rebuilt. Use those figures as the baseline.

Adjust for severe duty

Dust, high ambient temperature, poor fuel quality and long idle periods all load filters faster. Most manuals include a shorter severe-duty schedule; use it when your site matches the conditions it describes.

Use condition triggers

Air filter restriction indicators, hydraulic clogging indicators and the fuel water-in-fuel sensor tell you when a filter needs attention, whatever the hour meter says.

Oil analysis adds evidence. A particle count reported as an ISO 4406 cleanliness code, tracked over time, shows whether filtration is keeping the system at its target. A rising code is a reason to check filters and seals before the next scheduled change.

An ISO 4406 code has three numbers, for example 18/16/13. They give the particle count per millilitre at 4, 6 and 14 µm and larger, each as a range number; a lower number means cleaner fluid. Your component or machine maker states the target code.

Two common mistakes

Do not stretch an interval because a used filter looks clean; the dirt that matters is too small to see. And do not open an air filter housing more often than needed: every opening lets dust in. The inner safety element is replaced, not cleaned, at the interval the manual gives.

Keep a record

Log the hours, the part numbers fitted and any indicator or oil analysis readings at each change. The record shows which intervals can safely stay and which need shortening.
